5 February - 15 May. The Mother & Child exhibition by French-American painter and sculptor Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (1911-2010) is described as a celebration of one of life's central themes: motherhood - from pregnancy to birth to the life-long bond that exists between a mother and child.
The artist said: "You are born alone. You die alone. The value of the in-between is trust and love." Bourgeois influenced some of the most important art movements of the 20th century such as surrealism in the 1930s and installation art in the 1990s, and is hailed as being the inventor of Confessional art, an art form which draws heavily on autobiographical and very personal experiences.
Gl Strand was founded in 1825 by artist C.W. Eckersberg to raise awareness of art and break down the barriers between the art academy elite and the general public.
