3 December - 16 April 2011. Giacomo Puccini’s stirring love story between two cultures tells the tale of a passionate romance which begins when Butterfly, a Japanese geisha, meets an American naval officer. But when Butterfly finds herself on the receiving end of his betrayal, everything starts to go wrong.
One of the world's great romantic tragedies, Madama Butterfly is directed by Danish-Italian conductor Giordano Bellincampi who has previously conducted many Puccini operas at the Royal Danish Opera and is on the podium for all of the 2010/2011 performances.
Critics have hailed Danish director Lars Kaalund's novel staging of this production as "a refreshing interpretation of a masterpiece" and "visually seductive". Madama Butterfly is performed in Italian with Danish supertitles.
