11 September - 23 January 2011. At the World Fair in Paris in 1867, for the first time Japan presented its woodcuts to an instantly receptive Western audience.
The previously unseen material became very fashionable and much sought after. Artists such as Manet, Degas, Morisot and Gaugain began incorporating elements of Japanese design into their work, resulting in a profound influence on the direction of French Impressionism.
The exhibition at Ordrupgaard presents over 150 Japanese prints from newly-discovered collections in France along with impressionist masterpieces.
