Denmark’s residency permits in decline

The number of permanent residency permits granted so far in 2011 shows a sharp decline according to figures from Denmark’s ministry of justice.

Only 525 people had been granted permits up to the end of Sept 2011 compared with 1,796 in the same period in 2010. Rejected applications rose to 2,449 in 2011 compared with 1,468 the previous year.

It is thought that the points system introduced by the former right-wing government, which put great store on language and job skills as requirements for immigration, is responsible for the decrease.

The new left-wing government headed by Helle Thorning-Schmidt, which came into office in October 2011, has said that it intends to abolish the points system.
