Copenhagen has begun turning its cycle pathways into four-metre wide bike highways complete with pit stops for pumping up tyres and fixing broken chains.
City authorities have pledged to increase the number of suburban commuters traveling by bicycle from 37 per cent currently to over 50 per cent by 2015.
To ease the journey for cyclists traffic lights will be phased to prioritise bikes over cars. Copenhagen already has 390 km of bike paths and has spent 33.6 million euro on bike infrastructure in the last four years, The first two city-to-suburb highways will open at the end of 2011, extending 15 km from central Copenhagen.
